Step-by-Step Dog Obedience Training And Tips For Your Pet Dog

Archives for November, 2009

I am probably going to enroll my 4 month old puppy into the first class (I think it teaches how to sit and stay). I may go onto higher levels after that also.

What are they like? Are they ran smoothly? Were you satisfied? Was the cost worth it?

I would like to get a dog but I cannot currently, circumstances wont allow it. But since I have never had owned a dog myself I don’t even know how to teach a dog how to sit! Where can I go to learn dog training without having a dog to train?

my dog: 13 month old shepherd/lab mix

things needing attention: greeting people politely, jumping, consistency in command response, improvement walking on lead, recall, respecting ‘personal space’.

on a budget, want to spend my money wisely. thanks so much!!!
dorothy, while i appreciate the time you took with your response, it was not an answer to my question…it was also a waste of your own time, as you jumped to the wrong conclusion, assuming that i do not plan to, and do not already, train my own dog. i am already familiar with all the information you provided, i am just looking for a professional OBEDIENCE TRAINING PROGRAM for further help. please, provide answers questions in the future. that’s why its called Yahoo Answers. thanks.

I just got 2 rescue dogs a 7 month old and a 6 month old Great Danes. I need to do some training. Help! What is the best book to buy? Also for names do you like Mindy, Wendy or Tina For the Female?

Hi there, we have two adult dogs and will be adding a puppy to the family. The older dogs were both crate trained, but due to lack of space once they were about a year an a half we had to allow them free roam of the house (no problems)
We want to crate train the puppy, but three crates just does not work for us. How difficult will this be to crate train the puppy with the other two running free?

I have searched all over the internet for the absolute best offer.
So far the best I found was at http://moveto.ws/lnzmg97p6
Anyone know of a better deal?

If you have a dog and you need to train it but you don’t have the energy, patience or time to devote to it, you aren’t alone. This is an undertaking that requires a lot of all of these things, and what you want is a safe, well adjusted dog and for you to be happy with the results, too. What may help you get there is to hire a professional dog trainer.

When it comes to hiring a trainer, quality and cost are going to vary as with any profession. Training philosophies are also probably going to differ significantly depending on the trainer, too, especially because it involves interacting with animals. Therefore, take the following things into consideration as you make your selection.

What’s your budget? It can depend on where you live, but in some cases, you may be able to get training services for free, often done weekly by volunteers in shelters or parks. Or, you may pay for pricier service, up to $100 or even more per training session. What’s a reasonable fee? That will vary, depending on the trainer’s experience, where you live, the length of the program itself and the goals you have for your dog.

Take a look at your schedule. Some training programs happen every week, while others happen more often. Some training programs have you leave the dog at the facility, while others will want you to stay and participate in the training. Regardless, though, most trainers will want you to spend some time training your dog every day, either at the trainer’s facility or at home.

In some cases, you may want to consider so-called “boot camp” training programs. In that case, your dog will go away to a special facility for quite awhile, up to several weeks. The training the dog receives is intensive, happens over the training period of time, and it happens very regularly, too. However, don’t be concerned that this is too hard on dogs. Dogs love this type of treatment. Near the end of this type of training, you, too, will usually have to participate so that the dog’s obedience is “transferred” from the trainers to you.

The results of this type of training school can be amazing. Dogs who complete this type of program usually end up eager to follow instructions and very disciplined. This is true even if they’re not special service dogs. Even so, these dogs usually don’t show signs of frustration or repression. Their moods are bright and they play with energy and gusto.

Next, take a look at the goals for your obedience training. Do you want a dog that you can enter into shows, or do you just want a dog that won’t chase other pets or gnaw on your furniture? In addition, you’ll need to consider the breed and temperament of your dog to determine what type of and how much training is going to be needed.

Some dogs tend to be fearful, either because they’ve been mistreated or because they’re simply shy and submissive. Some dogs may be too assertive, again because they’ve been abused or just because it’s part of their personalities. The type of training you choose will be greatly influenced by the dog’s personality and temperament, your own situation, and the attributes you want to bring out or suppress.

Whatever the goals for your dog, and whatever your commitment and budget, you will want to hire a trainer who has infinite patience, energy, and a deep love for dogs. Most dog trainers have these characteristics very strongly.

Beyond these foundational characteristics, you’ll also want a trainer who agrees with you in philosophy and whose goals match yours. Some trainers insist that in fact, it’s the owner that needs to be trained rather than the dog, and there may be some truth to that. Some trainers are friendly and lenient and seek to “connect” with the dog, while others are more military in their approach. Still other trainers use a mix of both approaches.

It’s likely that you’ll lean toward one training style versus another, but neither training style is entirely subjective. Even if you have disagreements with your trainer, there are likely principles that you’ll agree on nonetheless. Persistence, patience and consistency, as well as the need for the human to be in the “alpha” position, are just a few of these commonly held beliefs.

When you look for your own trainer, ask for recommendations from friends and family who share similar philosophies, and shop around. You may have to change trainers at least once if you aren’t happy with whom you’ve picked at first. Don’t change on a whim, though. One of the most important parts of obedience training is that consistency is key, and a regular environment is necessary so that the dog can integrate what’s being taught.
