I have been trying to Crate train my Yorkie since he was 12 weeks, He is now 1 years old. He throws a fit every single time I place him in the crate, for bedtime. He barks, and Cries for Long periods of time,He also like to throw himself against the cage.I have introduced treats every time he goes in,I give him Praise. I’m still having trouble getting him to sleep. I don’t know what I could be doing wrong? I have a wire crate, he is potty trained,He has his favorite toys, and a bed. any ideas?

Yes, you should have a divider. You can feed her in there, but you will leave the door open. I discourage a water bowl while you are gone because she will have to pee while she’s locked up. You can still fold up a small blanket. The best time to crate train is at night, but if you would prefer her to sleep out of the crate, that is your choice. It may just take a little bit longer to get her trained.

Hi, I just had a question, I am receiving a puppy tomorrow, and already got my crate, however some people tell me I should place the divider to make it smaller, and some tell me that I should feed the puppy in the crate, but when I place the divider it makes it harder to leave the water bowl in their with the toys and pillow. Any suggestions? and would it be fine if the puppy does not always sleep in the crate? like on the bed?

The exercise pen can have newspapers on one side and bed/toys on the other. Yes, the play area can be inside the house. Preferably not on the carpeting.

so would you reccomend the play area a potty area too? if one side is his potty pads and the other is toys water etc..and would it be okay if the play area is in inside the house?

I recommend asking the breeders to not do that or find a different breeder. Not only does that create bad habits, but that is extremely unhealthy.

If the breeders let the puppies go potty in the crate what do you recommend. And thanks for all your help.

I am not sure… All dogs are completely different. You won’t know until you bring your dog home. Neither of my dogs howl, but again, all dogs are different.

All dogs are different. If you are consistent and work hard, he should get the potty training clue within a couple of weeks. That doesn’t mean, though, that you stop training. You cannot slack off once you think he has it because the moment that you do, he will take crucial steps backward.

Crate training assists with potty training. It helps your pup learn how to hold it because most dogs do not like to eliminate in the place they sleep. Plus, the crate can become their den- a safe place to call their own. Potty training is the consistent process of taking your puppy outside to eliminate. Separation anxiety is a “disorder” that some dogs experience- common problems are destruction, excessive licking, urinating, barking, etc… There are ways to help this issue.

What is the difference btwn crate training and potty training? What is separation anxiety?
by shelbylinstrom, on June 13 2010 @ 10:49 pm
You can accomplish both at the same time.
by beelstylez, on June 13 2010 @ 10:49 pm
should I potty train or crate train first?
by shelbylinstrom, on June 13 2010 @ 10:49 pm
What you should do really depends on the reason why your dog is barking. Is he nervous, scared, or excited?

My dogs bark every time my family comes in or out of a room. What shold I do? p.s im cheyenne
by shelbylinstrom, on June 13 2010 @ 10:49 pm
You can always keep the crate in your room at night. Also, sometimes a shirt that smells like you helps comfort. It sounds, though, like you need to do some more crate training. Warming him up to it, leaving the door open, praising him when he goes inside. I mention all of these tips in my video. I encourage you to watch it again… Don’t give up! Persistence and consistency is key!

even if i ignore him when he throws a fit/ barks and cries, he wont stop… ive tried everything up to putting his food in there treats etc. any suggestions?

Thanks very much for replying i will try that, love your site.

I would place a shirt that smells like you in her crate at night. Also, there is no problem putting the crate in your bedroom. The closeness may help soothe the whining. The ONLY way to get it to stop is to ignore her. She should be able to sleep through the night now…if you continue to get up and let her out, she will expect that every single time.
