What ate some good dog training books out there?

My one year old maltese needs some training in some areas, and I wanted to try to train him myself instead of behavior classes because they are SO expensive. What are some good books that helped you or that you know of? Also, what is a good way to socialize my dog, besides the training classes, if any? He barks and growls at other dogs and sometimes people.

Tom Dokken’s retriever training book
The other end of the leash by Patricial McConnell
Click to calm by emma parsons – this is a great book broken down into recipes to help owners with Dog aggressive, fear aggressive, human aggressive etc dogs
And I plan to by tons more books like…
Mine! and fight by jean donaldson which Mine! is about resource guarding in dogs and fight is about dog aggression.

The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell. Might I suggest when nearing people and dogs that you don’t tighten up on your leash. When helping my rescue dog get over his distrust of men I walked around the neighborhood asking men I saw if they would give him a treat which I carried in my pocket. It took a year but he did get over his fear of men. Most people love to help. Also, when you are ready to have people pet him ask that they rub either under his chin or on his chest. No big giants pounding him on top of the head. Yes, I used to be an assistant trainer for 10 years and classes are pretty high but you might try Petsmart. They’re probably not the best trainers but they can get you started and then you can get an idea of how to get him relaxed around other dogs.
The book I suggested is one that the school I helped in always recommends this book and I found it most helpful.

Find a local dog training club and sign up for basic obedience classes. Around here a 6 or 8 week class costs about $125, which is well worth it! You can’t learn everything from books.
Books are good, though. Read as many of these as you can find, and then read more. Every book will teach you something.
